At The Obsidian Institute (TOI), our journey began with a powerful vision: to create a space where gifted and talented Black and underrepresented youth could thrive, embrace their identities, and fully explore their intellectual potential. Our story is rooted in a deep commitment to transforming education and challenging the traditional narratives around what it means to be gifted and talented.
The Beginning
TOI was founded on the belief that brilliance comes in many forms and that often, gifted youth from underrepresented communities are overlooked or misunderstood. Many times, these students don’t see their unique talents celebrated or nurtured, and instead of soaring, they are held back by systems that don’t fully recognize or support their potential.
From this recognition grew a movement—a movement to create a space where Black and underrepresented students could not only excel academically but also develop a strong sense of self and agency. We believe that by creating an environment where students are empowered to explore, innovate, and grow, we can foster the next generation of leaders, creators, and change agents.
Our Why
The “why” behind The Obsidian Institute is simple but powerful: representation matters, and creating spaces where youth can see themselves reflected in their education is critical. We believe that every child deserves an opportunity to explore their brilliance and passions in a supportive environment that nurtures their strengths and celebrates their identities.
We knew we had to do more than just provide educational programs—we had to build a community, a movement, and a support network for these students and their families. We had to ensure that their experiences, voices, and talents were honored and uplifted in all that we do. This is why TOI exists—to empower gifted and talented Black and underrepresented youth to be their authentic selves and change the world in the process.
